Creating the environmental stewards of tomorrow

It’s been rough time for Australia’s native flora and fauna with drought and widespread bushfire. The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan has programs for students of all ages so that together we can create the next generation of environmental stewards.

Cultivating nature connection

Research is increasingly proving the link between positive connections with nature and the cultivation of pro-environmental attitudes. After all, how can we expect people to care about what’s going on in the natural environment if they have no connection to it?

Watching a student’s face light up with joy over a unique experience, and knowing that you may have just allowed this person to care a little more, is an incredibly special experience for an educator.

Connection through education

The education team at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan are in a fantastic position to create these moments through the many school excursions on offer. School excursions use a range of amazing teaching spaces and are run by experienced and passionate educators. Our remnant Cumberland Plains Woodland, an endangered ecological community, allows students to study one of the largest remaining patches of this plant community. If visitors are lucky they will also get to catch a glimpse of some of the woodland’s animal residents.

The Garden is also home to the Australian PlantBank, an award-winning conservation facility, which students can explore through either a guided or self-guided tour. Attached to the PlantBank is our teaching lab which is a great space for allowing students to see seeds up close and personal.
